So, when an apartment doesn't specify a particular availability date, does that probably mean it's available now and thus not likely to wait around a few months until we want an apartment, and therefore not worth looking into? That's what I've been assuming, but I don't actually know anything about apartments, so I thought I'd ask the æther.

From what I've seen, it probably does mean the apartment will be available now (or soon) but doesn't necessarily mean it won't be available in a few months. The landlord might not be able to find renters right away, or they might only be able to find someone looking for something more short-term.

Also, if it does stick around unrented for a few months, you probably don't want it either....

Depends. We're likely to be much more enthusiastic about a fix-it-up sort of situation than your average mendicants, for example.
