What I learned today
If you break something by upgrading, obviously the solution is upgrading more.

What did you upgrade and what did it break?

Warning: geekiness.
So, Belgaer, the sparc box that handles AFS backups (and plays music) was running some old version of Ubuntu. I needed a more recent version of FUSE for my thesis, so I upgraded it to Gutsy Gibbon about a week before Feisty Fawn came out. This seemed to work fine*, but what I didn't notice until just the other day was that some AFS commands were broken (stack overflow) in some modes, which was fine for normal operations but prevented the backup command from working properly. I tried about 4 different versions of manually-installed OpenAFS, all of which failed with various problems. Then, I was all like "Wait! Feisty Fawn is out! It may or may not solve some or all of my problems!" So I upgraded again. I nixed the manually-installed OpenAFS and reinstalled Ubuntu's version, and it worked**.
Luckily, the three or so times Belgaer's backup system has failed, I've always discovered it before actually needing the backups. I do feel like I'm going to need to recover Patty's home directory from backup eventually, since she keeps breaking it, but so far it's always recovered with small pain coefficients.
If this all sounds like Swahili, you asked. (I'd typed part of this in the original entry before I was all like "Only Quentin and Patty are likely to have any idea what I'm talking about."***)
*: with two hacks to get the OpenAFS module to build on sparc linux
**: with the same two hacks
***: Yes, I'm sure some of you other MITers understood the whole thing, but bear with me.
